The two actors met on the set of The Kissing Booth 2 in August 2019, and the movie was filmed in South Africa. While there, Taylor and Joey spent plenty of time together outside of work. "We just kind of hit it off," Taylor revealed. "When we were in South Africa, we had dinner together. I cooked for her, she cooked for me. We just became kind of like the best of friends."

As fans know, Joey King dated her The Kissing Booth co-star Jacob Elordi between 2018 and 2017, however by the time the second installment in the trilogy was being made, the two actors split up. "I’m sure it was odd for her to go back into a production with someone that she dated," the actor said. "And so me being this new castmate and Joel [Courtney] being there and Meganne [Young], we kind of just all meshed really well together."

"Joey walked in, she was wearing blue jean overalls, she had really short hair and a daisy in her hair," Taylor revealed on the Chicks in the Office podcast. "She walked in and she was like a ray of sunshine. She was so sweet and so supportive. I never had a chemistry read quite like hers. She’s just so talented and gives you everything she has and leans into it. Even if she doesn’t know her lines, she’s connected with you energetically. When she says something you believe it."

After they wrapped up the movie, the two actors remained close as they live close to each other. "When we got back to Los Angeles we just kept hanging out," Taylor revealed. "We live really near each other. And then the quarantine hit, and we kinda just needed someone to trust during that time, like, 'Okay, I know you’re not going out. I know who you’re seeing.' So we just became really close."

On Joey's birthday, Taylor shared a heartfelt message on his Instagram, and fans quickly started believing the two might be more than just friends.

"I would see her all the time because we lived five minutes away from each other, just happenstance. "When we were shooting [in South Africa], people came up to her all the time, and she was nothing but lovely. I was, like, 'I have to do that, too,'" Taylor said. "I’ve looked at other actors and how they interact, and it turns me off."
